Vacation Shmacation
Two months ago my boyfriend, Brendan, and I planned our first trip away together. We're broke college students working in retail and totally into each other. He's from Connecticut and moved out here to Los Angeles two and a half years ago and I was born and raised in the Los Angeles County. For Christmas we decided instead of fancy gifts, we'd go away for a few days. So after a bit of planning it was set, we’d spend the last week of January in the snow where he'd teach me to ski.
The first day we immediately hit the mountain. After renting our gear it was time to see just how uncoordinated I really am. Run after run I increased my skill and decreased my embarrassment. I was having a blast! Day two I was even better, I hadn't fallen once! It was around 1:30 and we'd been skiing for a couple of hours. We took a fifteen minute break then decided to try something a little more difficult. A blue square, whatever that means. Well, I don't know what exactly happened but the next thing I knew I was rolling sideways down the snow and there was an excruciating pain in my left leg.
After waiting for what seemed a lifetime, the ski patrol arrived. I remember thinking, "If i broke my leg, it'd be hurting a lot more." He had to stick his hand in my boot, just to make sure there wasn't any blood. There was blood, and a lot of it. I was rushed to the care unit at the Big Bear Mountain, then to an ambulance, then to a helicopter, and THEN to the hospital. My leg was pulsing in pain. I had to have emergency surgery where a metal rod was inserted in my leg and is being held in place with two metal screws.
So instead of a week in the snow, it was spent in the hospital. Things didn't go according to plan but honestly, they never do.
